Singing the Praises of Nukes – Wired Mag.

| Tuesday February 22nd, 2005 | 0 Comments

nuke_wired.gifWired Magazine seems to have a very anti-treehugger stance when it comes to energy use. This month, raising the hackles of enviro-bloggers everywhere, they praise nuclear energy as ‘clean and green‘.
The sentance that proves they miss the point: “Besides, wouldn’t it be a blast to barrel down the freeway in a hydrogen Hummer with a clean conscience as your copilot”. The problem is over consumption. Is a “green” Hummer really green? What about the freeway itself?
Still, nuclear power is likely to be with us for a while, and if alternatives (including efficiency) are to emerge as popular and effective solutions, it is important to remain cognizent of the drawbacks of nukes: “high security costs of protecting nuclear plants, the environmental damage of uranium mining, and the incalculable costs of safely storing nuclear wastes” – Makower
