No more food on the plane…hmmm…Wolfgang Puck is right there; high quality food and now more veggie options, more organic ingredients, and a Humane Farm Animal Treatment program. I liked Puck’s already and these are even better reasons to eat there. With more than 80 Gourmet Express restaurants, Wolfgang Puck announced a systemic nine-point program aimed at the worst abuses of farmed animals in full compliance with the Humane Society of the United State’s (HSUS) requirements including:

1. Eggs from cage-free hens
2. All-natural or organic crate-free pork since crates prevent pigs from turning around
3. All-natural or organic crate-free veal since crates prevent calves from turning or walking
4. Certified sustainable seafood
5. No foie gras since forced feeding swells ducks’ livers up to 10 times their normal size
6. All-natural or organic chicken and turkey meat from farms meeting Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) standards or Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) standards
7. Expanded certified organic selections
8. Expanded vegetarian selections
9. A request to poultry suppliers to use controlled atmosphere killing – CAK (also called controlled atmosphere stunning – CAS)
It’s hard to believe the disappearance of family farms replaced by agribusiness over the past 25 years has led to intense confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) as standard practice for animal-derived foods, making announcements like this a reason to celebrate. Wolfgang Puck is very proud of implementing these improvements and discusses them with Wayne Pacelle and Paul Shapiro of HSUS in this video.

Cool info… though this post reads a little too “advertorial” for my taste!

Yes, this is somewhat of an advertisement for Wolfgang Pucks, although I nor 3P are getting paid for it. (I’m guessing that’s what you mean by “advertorial?”). Blogs and op-eds are not neutral journalism; they express the opinions of the author. I am definitely a fan of improved animal-related business practices and promote these businesses. A conservative estimate is that 90% of animal-derived food products are from factory farms where the animals are raised in intense confinement (it’s probably much higher than that) so I promote businesses selling products derived from more humane practices. For more of these, see http://www.EatWellGuide.org. Thanks for reading…janice
