It's a misunderstanding. There is no dichotomy between economic growth and environmental stewardship. Saying that there is a trade-off is only stoking the myth. The issue has to do with how we DEFINE economic growth. If consumption and GDP are the only things we live by then we are basically screwed and destined for a soulless materialistic existence on a ravaged rock of a planet.
Anyone who thinks about it for more than a minute sees that there is more to life. Call it profit if you want, call it growth, call it whatever, but the point is we can all have "better lives" without wrecking the planet, but only if we realize that it's not ALL about material gain and mindless consimption. The "undeveloped" world is perhaps ironically at an advantage as it hasn't gone totally material in lifestyle yet, so has an opportunity to leap-frog the mistakes of the "developed world". Alas, greed may take over if people like the jokers above remain in charge.

I should add – this “divergence” is fake. You are probably the last person on earth who thinks climate change is not a problem. It's not that we can't find a way to deal with the consequences of increased CO2, it's that doing so is going to be catastrophically expensive in terms of money, society, and indeed life.
Furthermore, it's not just CO2 that's a problem, there are hundreds of problems associated with our overindulgent lifestyles and consumption that are causing irreprable harm to the planet. If you don't believe that, or if you think believing it makes you some kind of communist basically makes you a moron. Nothing personal man.

Coles – gimme a break. You are probably the last person on earth who thinks climate change is not a problem. UK court says Gore is a fraud. August 2007 Update: Man-made Catastrophic Global Warming Not True. Unfortunately, Hansen is a political hack of George Soros. Further, flawed NASA Global Warming data paid for by George Soros. In order to be an intelligent reader you must have a basic knowledge. Please do your own homework; a starting point http://www.InteliOrg.com/ Remember CONSENSUS is NEVER science it's always a POLITICAL STATEMENT (Party Line).

The debate is over; it’s political propaganda NOT science.
