I guess the general public can be eliminated next to p&g chemical plants , with a slow sneaky process without making to much noise , while keeping under the radar screen with this problem. How about a class action law suit while we can barely breath !

I drive and pickup truckloads of soap for the last five years, and about 3 times a week, p&g cooks up lye or whatever it is and the fumes are so strong it burns your sinus, makes your eyes water , then the toxins land on your tongue and eats away at your gums, promoting teeth decay and loss before there time. Next I;ll have kidney loss and or heart attack with all the toxins in my body! They should put a skull and cross bones on the sign that says welcome to cincinnati!

You only have to visit Cincinnati to realize what P&G has done to the air. The percentage of people who have asthma is horrendous. I lived there 2X and came away with asthma which I will spend the rest of my life dealing with.
They are treated like they are Gods in Cincinnati. Mean while, P&G pollutes the people to death. Ever drive on Rt 91 (I think) passing the home of P&G. You have to close the windows and not breath for about 5 minutes because of the yellow thick gas that sits over the plant.

It brings a smile to my face too when I hear that companies are becoming environmentally responsible. P&G has already taken one step with their Pure Essentials line of Tide, Downey, and Bounce, which I find to be a great product. I think that big companies like this making more environmentally friendly products will have a big impact on getting consumers to actually use such products. While some of the problem is people not caring, I also think that they might not trust other environmentally friendly brands because they are not well known, and thus aren't using them. The P&G name on them could change that.

Mr Bret. Until we swing back to an era where we don't consume to dispose I think we are heading in the wrong direction. I'll keep a look out for you. Keep the passion.

Great post! I am reminded of the "Why being 'less bad' is no good" sentiment in Cradle to Cradle. But I agree with you that it's crucial to adopt a welcoming attitude when big corporations start to get a shadow of a clue -- and to communicate one's support to them. I particularly like the quote that "hypocrisy is the first step towards real change."

Hi and thanks for your comment,
It is certainly possible that I am responsible for dioxin emissions, but as a conscious consumer I can get pretty far away from that scene (I don't have a baby, if I buy napkins they are seventh generation 100% recycled non-bleached, I don't eat sausage, etc.), but yes they are pervasive.
You make a good point, it is important to remember the nature of the current production cycle and that the big players have had a tremendous impact on communities and the Earth. However, it is also important to recognize that this system is changing, we are changing this system, and as organizations begin to align with such, it is important to welcome them aboard. Just as it is equally important not to be naive, or 'swept away' by green wash. It's a fine line to walk, but I think that is what we are doing. :-)
And yes, the beauty of sustainability initiatives is that they tend to produce a nice financial upside. Thankfully so. Otherwise our job would be a hell of a lot harder.

Hi Bret,
Well I see P&G's air pollution rating at 52nd closely matches their P&G/Buckeye Perry, FL chlorine-bleaching pulp mill's air pollution rating at 57th worst in the nation.
P&G says they no longer "own" the Buckeye toxic mill, but they get nearly all of the product that comes out of the mill for producing disposable diapers, sanitary napkins, sausage casings, pill capsules, cellulose for ice cream and other food additives -- yes, you are consuming dioxins from a chlorine-bleaching pulp mill, I'm sorry to have to tell you.
Every place that P&G has ever had a production mill or plant, they've contaminated the area with toxics, and one day just walked away, leaving the poisons for the local people to deal with.
Thank you for enlightening people that P&G is very slow in coming into the "sustainable" ranks of corporations, but I can tell you that if it doesn't make them big profits, they won't do it. I'd be careful about bragging on P&G too soon.
thanks -
