We are a Houston electronics recycler and can appreciate more help in regards to cleaning up our city. Before this article I was not aware of this company, so I am glad to have some across it. We take in a lot of old electronics, printers, and computers. We connect and ship with China to process and refurbish many of these items which are often sold to third world countries. But with many of the changes in government regulations, China has slowed down its import/export channels which could hurt our ability to purchase and recycle these materials. Vietnam has become a quiet partner in the electronics recycling industry as they are able to refurb and process these materials at such low labor wages.

While I support the idea of Reconnect I worry about data security. I wonder about how safe the data is on the disposed systems. What about hard drive erasure or asset management? There are several computer recyclers in Houston that already provide recycling services with a proven track record of security and promoting customer awareness. Technocycle.com happens to be my favorite.

Goodwill of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties is a member of the Reconnect partnership with Dell. As part of the program, we refurbish and distribute computers to residents currently lacking computer access at home helping to close the digital divide. We are also are providing sustainable job skill development for our staff and clients working and learning in the program. The computers and equipment that are not able to be refurbished are recycled using a certified recycler that has passed a rigorous Dell environmental and social downstream audit.
For a list of all our donation sites in our 3 county area where we accept computers and electronics for free, visit our website at http://www.sfgoodwill.org/LocationsDonate.aspx
Thanks,
Kim Fox
Director of Environmental Business
Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties
