View "A Crude Awakening - The Oil Crash." Cheap oil has subsidized sprawl and low energy efficiency. Now we must work to catch up with Europe. Buy goods, services and food locally (vs. rolling warehouses on Interstates), make use of walking, bicycling, light and high speed rail, get to know your neighbors & neighborhood. Instead of "substituting oil for knowledge," we now get to apply the knowledge and reap the benefits. The end of being addicted to the "devil's excrement" is coming to a close. Time to emphasize renewables (conservation, solar, hydro, wind) and local communities. Gas as we know it is cheap at $4 gal ($8 gal in Europe). We thinking nothing of paying $50 gal for Starbucks coffee.

I really like the light flow of this article and especially, the ending with:
'So what will happen when the economy digs out of the current reces... er - slowdown? Will we all jump back in our cars, filled with cheap gas, forget all we've learned about sustainable (and livable) development in a mad dash back to our house in the distant ‘burbs?'
That would have been so very nice to do...maybe, in electric or hydrogen cheap jeep/suv and we could all forget about sustainable, renewable and green/blue, because 'those eco things' are going to be substantial part of our every day life, deeply incorporated into everything, even our mind

This commentary is right on the money! I have been thinking of this for several years when the gas prices began to get crazy. I grew up in a small town that is near a larger city (Columbus, Ohio) and see the suburban sprawl coming to my hometown. And now I'm hearing many are considering moving back to the big city. As for me, I work in the same town and drive maybe a mile and a half to work.
Good commentary!
