Since both are ascribed as offsets. It is immaterial what they offset and so cannot be a described as category mistake.

Its surprising that people actually do not support the carbon offset. Like you said, our infastructure will take many many years to change...and the way its looking we are lucky if that is the case.
Kudos on defining morality v. science...the more pragmatic view on these issues, the better!
Best,
JJW

As long as it's not a "get out of jail free" card, carbon offsets have a place.
The definition of what is moral in the article was more `what is a moral absolute' - absolutism is most of the time how religion defines morality. It is most definitely morally repugnant to knowingly pollute. The difference here with cheating is how much control an individual has over her polluting lifestyle.

We especially in the West regularly pay someone else to do things in our name; usually this is because they can do these things more economically than we can ourselves.
Carbon Offsets are one such service.
Somethings we can do more economically ourselves. But only about a third of our CO2 emissions are readily done ourselves.
Those who would chastise us for not personally fixing that which we cannot economically do ourselves are really in the do-nothing camp, and should be ashamed of themselves.

Thx for this post--lucid thinking...Seems the moral question, as in any "system", lies with the integrity, diligence and competence of those involved in the processes of designing, implementing and overseeing the true nature and quality carbon offsets
