LED street lights use about 42% less energy than conventional gas discharge lamps - and thanks to the intelligent dimming, even more energy (and thus CO2) can be saved. The energy savings do not only help to protect the environment at a crucial time, they also disburden the budgets of cities and communities.

LED street lights are becoming very popular, they are extremely energy efficient. A average LED street lamp has about 30 LEDs and draws about 30 watts. Far less than bulbs.

But, thats only one reason why cities are switching to them. LED street lights can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years without ANY kind of maintenance. This more then off sets the initial buying price. They are also BRIGHTER yet focus the light better onto the ground, cutting down on light pollution. The glow is also very pleasant.

There is still a large expense converting from HPS (or whatever technology the municipality is using) to LED. It isn't simply a matter of switching a burned out light bulb for another type. Put hopefully municipalities will see that once that is done, as you say, the maintenance is nearly non-existent and LED's are much more efficient. It's just getting them over that initial hurdle.

"Still, many municipalities are wary of moving into LED technology due to the large capital expense of LED's combined with what some see as an unproven technology."

Large capital expense? What about the almost non-existent maintenance? At a minimum all cities should at least be replacing burned out units with LED fixtures.
