It’s interesting that many excited about going green forget that the one of the most harmful things would be to replacing. You need to modify existing structures if they are still usable to get the most benefit – for the wallet and the planet.

Imagine, suburbs that produce more power some days than the power company, rechargeable cars running on solar for some of the commute, running costs for a home getting closer to zero every day, government subsidies helping folks to make this possible, imagine a modern America with a renewed dream, and no capitalist sociopaths in charge. Indeed Scott, great suggestions. I had a green building contractor tell me about a couple excited about “going green,” wanting to knock down their old house and build a new one elsewhere on the property. Thankfully, the contractor saw the bigger picture before the big dollar signs and suggested they instead renovate what they had already.

You always “pick the lowest hanging fruit first” – efficiency & conservation. Beefed up insulation, triple-pane windows, large thermal mass on interior, proper orientation of building, sunpipes, caulking, insulated drapes & curtains.
