I believe solar thermal will probably dominate over photovoltaic. As to global grid, it's a nice idea, but I think besides the fact that its technical feasibility is not clear, I think geopolitics may also be a big obstacle. I suspect that the intermittency of solar will probably be more successfully dealt with using energy storage rather than a global grid approach.
