I can't see how they can continue to grow at this rate without once again pushing the price of oil up to record levels and with it coal & Gas.
Ultimately, clean tech is going to become the economic choice.

The irony of course, is that even when you get small scale solar or micro-hydro projects going in poor, rural areas, the first thing people do is go out and get a TV and boombox. Not that people should be denied the basics that the rest of the world takes for granted, but basically people buy luxuries and become consumers which definitely increases their footprint. Still, you have to start somewhere!

Many third world working poor will never be reached by grid-generated electricity. FOr them, the prospects for accessing renewable energy are encouraging. We at www.GreenMicrofinance.org work to make clean energy an option - since it is generated LOCALLY, it solves a number of problems. No grid is required, and replacing kerosene lamps with solar improves health. Generating biomass fuel makes for cleaner cooking stove fuels and decreases both deforestation and unsanitary refuse. Third world households consume so little electricity that their entry level needs are met by existing technology!
