The key to getting human beings to be more sustainable is to create clear reward structures and feedback mechanisms that make it enjoyable and in the individual's self-interest. We are only going to get so far with punishments and sacrifice. People need to view things in a different light, i.e. using less power (sacrifice) = more money in their pocket and a healthier planet (benefits).

We need to bring the global benefits, like a healthier planet, down to an individual scale, and games are the perfect way to do this.

As game designer extraordinaire Jane McGonigal says, properly designed games are "happiness engines", parcelling out just the right amount of challenge, so the player does not get frustrated, and just the right amount of reward, so that the player is encouraged to continue playing.

Bringing gaming concepts into work will serve the dual goals of bringing more happiness to people while creating social benefits, such as real-world improvements towards sustainability goals.

This article hits the nail right on the head.
