The Germans have done this for years - potatoes in the front yard AND they'd sweep the sidewalk in front of their house every day! A lot of wonderful awareness and the obvious tasty benefits come from your sort of enterprise.
I'm a master gardener, and environmentalist since the 70's. You may be interested to know that my favorite seed company has opened shop on the west coast. It is Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, on the web: www.rareseeds.com, and they have a great online catalog. They have incredible things from all over the world and they have no genetically modified seeds, just the real thing.
Very Best to you- Betty from Virginia

Fantastic!
