How to Stay Cool in a Crumbling Economy

Sometimes you can eat your words, and they taste good. LA’s Coolhaus has taken the staid category of the ice cream truck and brought it inventively into our time.
Using local and organic ingredients whenever possible, these ice cream sandwiches, all centered around an architectural theme, come in both “prefab” (generally offered) flavors, like Mies Vanilla Rohe, Mintimalism, and Frank Behry, and can be custom designed on request, either on the spot or as an ongoing exclusive flavor, like Renzo Pie-Ano launching soon at Wurstkuche.
Coolhaus is an example of what the founders call “Farchitecture” – the exploration of the intersection of food and architecture, using disciplines not typically associated with each other to enhance the execution.

In a move that is both sustainable and I’m not sure what sort of message it sends, the wrapping can be made of edible material, with a company’s brand, name, or logo on it. I can’t quite get my head around people eating my logo, but I do suppose it would be memorable, and done right, be a good example of a company’s environmental commitment, walking the talk.
Using the tool of the moment, Coolhaus is on Twitter and announces their planned locations for the day, so people can find their converted US Post Office truck plying these unique confections.
Apparently drawing inspiration from both their LA surroundings and being a real life architect and green real estate developer by day (quitting soon though, according to this LAist article), I’m betting their high priced small treats will go over quite well in this restrained economy, in line with the Lipstick Indicator.
Smartly adding to the conversation value of their offerings, they will soon be incorporating sugar based edible spoons and popsicles modeled after famous buildings.
Their almost overwhelming success in the midst of this economy shows that with some thought, creativity, and unique delivery, it is definitely possible to succeed in these times.
