Amtrak competes against modes of transportation that are heavily subsidized--most obvious being highways and roads. We gladly subsidize roads and then complain that passenger rail requires subsidies. Isn't our bias clear here? Isn't rail setup to fail? When will we stop expecting Amtrak to make a profit? It needs government funding, period. But it only calls for routes of a maximum of about 400 miles. That's the distance that rail can be competitive with air travel. 2) I love the idea of the slow, scenic trains as well, but I'm really not sure that's where our tax money should be going, given other priorities. The train from LA to SF (and it doesn't even go to SF) is really just a tourist ride. Should we be spending stimulus funds on it? I have a hybrid opinion on Amtrak:
