For many mainstream consumers, though, green brands are often not even part of consumers' consideration set. Low awareness, poor availability in the stores where mainstream consumers shop, and high prices often prevent green brands from seriously being considered at all by a significant portion of the mainstream.

I agree with Jacquie that green products need to put more emphasis on primary benefits to win the battle of perceptions with “brown” products. If it cannot stand up to the "brown" competition without being marketed as being green, then it will not ultimately be successful.

Why? Because the "green" fad will wain in time. When this happens, those "green" products that will continue to be successful will be those that can compete head on with those that are "brown" as Jacqueline mentions.

When the fad wears out, companies will just be expected to be green as opposed to marketing themselves as such.

I think Jaqueline is spot on with her assessment of what “green” means in the marketplace today.

A key point is “green” products (and services) must stand alone without its key marketing strategy being that it is green. I've been using a website called Green Home for years. They're a true green retailer- focused on getting you environmental products in the greenest way possible. Check out their website www.greenhome.com before Earth Day and you can enter their giveaway contest! They're giving away 100s of products just for telling them how you've gone green in the last year. Not that hard!

If you're looking for a one-stop shop to get your green products, go to www.greenhome.com

Going green should be something everyone, and every company does!
