The green movement has gone from hippie to alternative to downright trendy in the past couple of years, and with its rise in popularity comes the call for business owners to incorporate more social responsibility in their business practices.
One such company that has taken the reins in a green-centric product world is MODO, an eco eyewear company that takes environmental consciousness to a new level.
MODO was founded by Alessandro Lanaro in 1990. In 2008 Lanaro created the ECO (Earth Conscious Optics) line of eyewear, an environmentally-conscious brand that examines every step in the process of making and distributing eyeglasses in order to make them more sustainable. MODO is recognized as the first consumer company in the world to receive an ECV (Environmental Claims Validation) on the recycled content of the ECO glasses. Recognized by leading magazines such as O: The Oprah Magazine, Sierra Club Magazine and Bazaar, MODO has set the standard for green eyewear.
About the Glasses
Each pair of ECO glasses are made from quality recycled plastic and high quality stainless steel with frames that are made of 95% recycled material. The packaging is a simple box that is designed to be a container for the buyer’s old frames, which can be sent in a provided envelope to have them repurposed. ECO frames are trendy, stylish and extremely affordable at around $139.
About the Environment, and Paying it Forward
MODO recognizes that social responsibility doesn’t just end with the use of recycled materials. The envelope that holds a customer’s old frames gets mailed to One Sight, an organization that MODO has partnered with that sends ophthalmologists to Africa and Southeast Asia. These eye care professionals take the donated frames and use them to make new glasses for those in need. MODO has also sequestered carbon through their partnership with Trees for the Future, an organization that plants trees in Africa and Southeast Asia. Through this partnership, Trees for the Future plants a tree for every frame MODO sells, and at the end of 2010 planted nearly half a million new trees in this region.
