Remaking a Sustainable Rwanda: Photo Essay
"SEVOTA Survivors Meeting"
These women have survived an unimaginable ordeal. They are survivors of rape during the genocide. Most also had their families killed. They also all had children as a result of rape and about half are HIV positive. They met with us and brought along their kids, all of whom are now about 17 years old. Some of the children do not know they were born of rape. Many of the women have been rejected from whatever family they have left. All of them have post traumatic stress syndrome and financial problems.
SEVOTA is a support organization that gives these women and their children some degree of help, and brings them together for a chance at a somewhat normal life. It was one of the most emotional things I’ve ever experienced and it’s extremely difficult to write about it.
