Stories & Beer on Zero Deforestation

At last night’s “Stories & Beer Fireside Chat”, TriplePundit’s Founder, Nick Aster, talked with Sara Santiago, Phil Covington, and Miriam Swaffer about the issue of deforestation, and how companies and NGOs are working together to end it.

In the past two years, we’ve seen rapid and unanticipated changes in the forestry sector, as prominent pulp, paper, and palm oil suppliers have committed to zero-deforestation policies. These commitments were made, in large part, due to years of strategic campaigning by international and local NGOs. In 2014, many brands have in turn adopted zero-deforestation policies. As a result, we are seeing a new norm of zero-deforestation in supply chains, launching us into a global movement toward protecting the rainforests of Southeast Asia.

In this month’s “Stories and Beer”, we discussed the implications of these policies, the critical partnerships of NGOs and companies to uphold them, and the road ahead.

For the fast food giant, which restructured its corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability team in 2012 to focus on developing a strategic framework, the process was, shall we say, meaty. Like a well-balanced meal, McDonald’s has put five portions on its CSR plate: Food, Sourcing, Planet, People and Community.

When a multi-national like McDonald’s with a worldwide presence and a complex network of stakeholders creates a CSR strategy, you expect flavor, complexity and challenges. And lots of discussion about the “right” approach.

“Our new CSR framework demonstrates our intent to grow the business while having a positive impact on society,” said Bob Langert, VP of Sustainability at McDonald’s. “Now, more than ever, customers care about their food and where it comes from. They want to know what companies like McDonald’s are doing to improve the world in which they live. Because of our size and scale, we can influence change for the better.”

In April, we worked with the CSRwire team to turn this debate into a live Twitter conversation. We chatted at #SustyBiz with SAP‘s Sustainability Chief Peter Graf, BSR‘s CEO Aron Cramer, and CDP‘s Executive Director Nigel Topping. For one hour, we discussed the trials and tribulations of pursuing sustainability, in a dialogue that featured 232 participants contributing 1,388 tweets and more than 9 million impressions.

On Wednesday, April 30th, Nick Aster hosted a live Google Chat with Brad Molotsky. Brad is the Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Brandywine Realty Trust, a NYSE listed real estate investment trust, and is the co-creator of the Brandywine Environments sustainability initiative. Brandywine specializes in the ownership, management, leasing and development of class-A commercial office properties in selected markets throughout the United States, owning and managing over 36 million square feet of office product.

During this Google Chat interview, Brad told us about the specific ways he’s incorporating Brandywine’s sustainability goals into the business and how this work pays off. On April 16th, General Mills marked its 44th anniversary with the release of its 2014 CSR report – voluntarily disclosing progress on its social and environmental goals – including sustainably sourcing 100 percent of its 10 priority ingredients by 2020. That represents more than 50 percent of the company’s annual raw material purchases and includes oats, wheat, dairy, palm oil, cocoa and vanilla, among others.

The challenge ahead is significant. From finding the right partners to improving farmers’ profitability and the sustainability of their farming techniques, General Mills will need to not only focus on immediate social and environmental impact but also on sustaining its business for the long-term?
