Green Buildings Get Boost in L.A.

laresized.jpg Los Angeles is the latest (and largest) city in the nation to adopt a green building ordinance. Last month, the L.A. Times reported that two City Council committees voted to enact regulations that would require privately built projects over 50,000 square feet to meet LEED certification. Considering that there are over 200 such buildings constructed annually in the city, this move is a major boost to the green building industry.

The ordinance is expected to go into effect as quickly as 6-7 months from now. City Council President Eric Garcetti said, "When you do something this big, it can be quite scary...But this has been an inclusive process. It will lead to a healthier city and a healthier planet."

The ordinance has received widespread support from all major constituencies in the city, including the L.A. Business Council, the Building Industry Association, and major developers.

L.A. joins over 120 other cities in adopting similar ordinances, including Seattle, Boston, and San Francisco.
