More LED Potential for Developing World

led2.jpgWorldchanging has an entire category called "leapfrog nations" - the phenomenon of developing countries making technological leaps forward without the burden of making the mistakes other countries made in their evolution. If Evan Mills' work at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab pans out, then LED lighting may be the next great leapfrog technology (press release). LEDs are supremely efficient light sources that are getting cheaper and more powerful by the day. With a market as vast as the developing world, the business potential is an enormous as the potential to light people's worlds:

Commercially available 1-watt WLEDs require 80 percent less power than the smallest energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps and can be run on rechargeable batteries charged by a solar array the size of a paperback novel... Such LEDs could actually deliver more light to tasks than even 100-watt light bulbs.

The result of all the research at Berkeley labs, the social marketing approach of Stanford business school etc is the 'MIGHTY 'light being marketed in INDIA for Rs.3000/-[$75];it is very expensive for the poor when china companies are selling compact cute solar led lanterns [like the hurricane kerosene light used by the poor]for Rs.24o[$6!!]true the chinese quality is questinable, but how can anyone justify a mighty light that costs Rs.3000;it looks the object is to avail of the govt.of India subsidy;the best light solar LED light i have seen is the BoGo light priced at Rs.500[$12]. If you want to really serve the poor produce a light comparable in price to the bogo or the chinese light.

Very true. I agree with the above agreemnt.

The wonderful jini called LED has not yet been embraced by our soceity.Only as more people adopt LED in their daily lives will the cost of owning LED's come down.

The intervention of the goverment in this area is very important as the ramifications of LED's usage in soceity can only be positive for the whole world.
