WalMart: 1MPG Better Saves over $35 Million

walmarttruck.jpgI always have to preface any Wal-Mart post with my grain of salt, but when it comes to demonstrating the raw financial savings of better efficiency, they've constantly amazed and should serve as a common-sense model. Simply by increasing the fuel efficiency of their truck fleet from 6mpg to 7mpg (though a variety of means) the company will save at least $35 million. Those of us with wider concerns can do the math to see how many other benefits this has for society at large. (more on MSNBC)

Conservation is not un-American. But it has been portrayed that way in advertising in the main stream media. The media will rarely question their advertisers messages, because they might lose the account, so Americans haven't heard about conservation as an alternative to consumption in the MSM for the past 30-40 years. This whole paradigm is about to change. Good for Walmart! Saving a buck has ALWAYS been easier than making one. ALWAYS will be.

And then there's this about how much UPS saves by routing trucks to avoid left turns:

none of this news, of course, means that a company like wal-mart can ever be made sustainable. Broadly speaking, there is a difference between something that is good for the environment and something that is simply not as bad. This tends to get lost in all the greenspeak of today.

There's no doubt that Walmart has a long way to go before it becomes sustainable but I have come to believe they are serious about it and may, indeed, even lead the way for other companies to follow suit. Their environmental goals are ambitious and they seem to be following up on them. Let's give them a break. They ultimately may make a big difference.
