Tampa, Fla. (July 24, 2014) Homeless pets in Los Angeles are dining on nutritious, natural pet food, thanks to the generosity of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and Ellen DeGeneres’ pet food company, Halo.
As part of the Halo and Freekibble.com “Hollywood Kibble Drop,” 200,000 meals were delivered to LA’s North Central Shelter, where rescues and shelters across the Los Angeles area went to pick up their donations.
The donations are a result of special gifts made by the celebrities who were nominated for Oscars at the March 2 Academy Awards. Non-winning Oscar nominees in the Best Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress and Director categories with an array of special products and service received a coveted $85,000 nominee “Everyone Wins at the Oscars®” gift bag from Distinctive Assets, the marketing firm that launched the celebrity swag trend 15 years ago.
Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres’ pet food company, Halo, Purely for Pets, in partnership with Freekibble.com and Greatergood.org, gave 20 non-winning Oscar nominees 10,000 meals of natural pet food to donate to the animal shelter or rescue of the celebrity’s choice.
This Hollywood Kibble Drop represents the donations made on behalf of the stars. Los Angeles organizations receiving donations include County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control, Los Angeles Animal Services, Kitty Bungalow, Much Love Animal Rescue, Beagle Freedom Project, Basic Needs Foundation and Love That Dog Hollywood, selected by nominee for best actress in a supporting role, June Squibb.
Several shelters in other parts of the country also received donations: Julia Roberts chose Stray Hearts Animal Shelter in Taos, NM to receive her donation, Meryl Streep asked that a donation be made in her father, Harry Streep Jr.’s, name to The Little Guild of St Francis in West Cornwall, CT, and Barkhad Abdi gifted his donation to the Midwest Animal Rescue and Services in his hometown of Minneapolis, MN.
Well known for its year-round philanthropic efforts, Halo, Purely for Pets partners with Freekibble.com and GreaterGood.org to donate more than 1.5 million meals to shelter pets each year.
The company donated 1 million meals to shelter pets for the U.S. Postal Service Adopt a Shelter Pet Stamp Program, and sponsors the acclaimed PBS series “Shelter Me,” directed by Steven Latham, who helped coordinate the Los Angeles donations.
In addition, Halo is the proud sponsor of the Olate Dogs’ 2014 Rescue Tour. Most of the Olate Dogs, a performing dog act and winners of America’s Got Talent in 2012, are rescue dogs. Their tour is designed to raise awareness for pet adoption.
Halo and Freekibble.com, in conjunction with Greatergood.org, partner to feed more than 1.5 million meals per year to shelters and rescues across the nation. This partnership provides homeless pets the highest quality food possible, helping shelter pets look and feel their best, sometimes helping them find their forever homes. In fact, in a survey of 85 shelter professionals, 71% said that better food quality “definitely helps” dogs and cats to get adopted.
“High quality food is critically important for shelter pets because it impacts their overall health,” affirms GreaterGood.org Executive Director Liz Baker. “A well-nourished dog is a happy dog, and that makes a dramatic difference when it comes to getting them out of the shelter and into a permanent, loving home. We are thrilled to have partnered with FreeKibble and Halo on this meaningful initiative to improve the lives of shelter dogs.”
Success stories like this where good food can help homeless pets find their forever homes is a cause close to Halo co-owner Ellen DeGeneres’ heart. “Pet adoption is something I’m extremely passionate about. I believe that by working together, we can find good homes for the millions of homeless and abandoned pets out there,” she says.
