The psychological health of business professionals greatly impacts corporations. Employees play a pivotal role in an organization. And without reliable staff, some businesses couldn’t thrive. For those who suffer with poor psychological health, some situations in the workplace can negatively impact their productivity, as well as contribute to a negative environment. This can affect business profits and stunt the growth of a business. For this reason, it’s important to create a mentally healthy workplace.

Maintaining the psychological health of business professionals starts at the top of a corporation. In other words, an owner, supervisor or manager has to care about the mental health of his staff. He should recognize situations that contribute to poor mental health, and then create solutions.

Factors that may compromise the mental health of employees include burnout, dissatisfaction or the inability to balance work and personal life. An interest in the psychological health of employees makes good business sense because:

1. Reduces turnover ratio: It’s costly to hire and trained new staff members. Plus, inadequate employees can slow company growth. Creating an environment that psychologically healthy reduces staff turnover because it increases job satisfaction. What can employers do? Be realistic with job demands and encourage employees to take breaks and clear their minds. If an employee believes that he’s unable to meet the expectations of his employer, he may seek employment elsewhere.

2. Increases productivity: Mental health has a direct influence on how well your employees perform. Chronic stress or fear of failure can trigger careless mistakes. It’s vital that employers provide adequate training and provide feedback in a manner that’s constructive, not critical. Improved working conditions can reduce an employee’s stress level and improve the efficiency of the workplace.

3. Provides a safe environment: Workplace bullying and harassment can play a role in poor psychological health. Dealing with this pressure on a daily basis can be mentally and emotionally draining, and contribute to a hostile work environment. Employers should not ignore complaints, but develop procedures to deal with unacceptable behavior.

4. Promotes recovery. Employers who take an interest in the mental health of their professionals support their recovery. Depending on the nature of a psychological problem, some employees take a leave of absence. For example, an employee may need a mental health break or seek alcohol abuse treatment. Supporting employees who struggle with mental health problems can enhance an employer’s reputation and improve the employee-employer relationship.

If truth be told, corporations need competent staff members to achieve their goals. Maintaining an environment with limited stressors and supporting the mental well-being of employees is key to advancement and satisfaction.
