A cornerstone of the HEINEKEN sustainability strategy, Brewing a Better Future (#BaBF), is focused on growing the percentage of locally sourced ingredients in its raw material supplies. HEINEKEN wants to operate in a way that improves the quality of life for local individuals and communities and helps drive inclusive growth particularly in economies in Africa.
HEINEKEN has set sourcing commitments to reach by 2020:
- 50% of HEINEKEN’s main raw materials to be supplied from sustainable sources;
- 60% of agricultural raw materials used in Africa to be locally sourced within the continent.
Through its local sourcing projects, HEINEKEN helps smallholder farmers to improve yields and compete against imported crops. This increases the incomes from their farms and makes a significant contribution to economic empowerment and improved food security at a local level. And local sourcing also benefits HEINEKEN: it eliminates import duties, secures a sustainable supply of raw materials and reduces the transport-related environmental footprint.
