Energy Options: Pros and Cons

Today’s society uses an enormous amount of energy. Indeed, the longest shadow of our presence on the planet comes as the result of our production, generation and utilization of energy. New sources of energy are being developed to replace declining accessible fossil fuel supplies and to reduce our impact on the climate as the result of greenhouse gas emissions. Yet there is no perfect energy source. Each and every one has its own advantages and compromises. This series will explore the pros and cons of various energy sources.

The Pros and Cons of Energy Storage Systems

As we begin to move away from fossil fuels, it is important to recognize that those fuels provided two functions in one. They…
fusion

Fusion Power: Pros and Cons

Nuclear fusion is the most basic form of energy in the universe. It is what powers the sun and all of the stars.…
wind farm

Wind Power: Pros and Cons

When we think of wind power, we generally think of those large high tech towers with slowly spinning blades that have sprung recently…
Geothermal

Geothermal Energy: Pros and Cons

The core of the Earth, some 4,000 miles beneath its surface, is a fiery morass of superheated gas and molten rock which exists…
Tidal power

Tidal Power: Pros and Cons

Innovators have long recognized the potential to capture great quantities of free, clean energy from tides that can be used to spin turbines…
Solar power tower

Solar Thermal: Pros and Cons – Part 2: Concentrating Solar Power

Concentrating solar collectors focus sunlight onto a central receiver, amplifying its intensity to achieve very high temperatures that can be converted to steam…
solar hot water

Solar Thermal: Pros and Cons – Part 1: Solar Heating and Cooling

The term solar thermal has been used to describe two different types of systems. One is where solar panels are used to collect…
fuel cell car

Fuel Cell Energy: Pros and Cons

What exactly is a fuel cell? You can think of it as a battery that you add fuel to, in order to keep…
biomass

Biomass Energy: Pros and Cons

Biomass energy has been around since long before anyone spoke of renewables or alternative energy sources. There was a time when wood was…

Combined Heat and Power: Pros and Cons

Combined heat & power (CHP) or cogeneration, is really not an energy source itself, but rather more of an energy multiplier, squeezing more…
nuclear reator

Liquid Fluoride Thorium Power: Pros and Cons

Last August, I posted an article on Thorium reactors, a form of nuclear power that supposedly overcomes many of the concerns associated with…

Tar Sands Oil: Pros and Cons

Canada has oil reserves of 170 billion barrels, more than Iran and Nigeria combined. Much of that oil has been considered “not economically…
green algae

Algae-based Biofuel: Pros And Cons

Algae–based biofuel is a new energy source that has been getting a lot of attention lately. Certain types of algae contain natural oils…
SONY DSC

Clean Coal: Pros and Cons

The people who still support coal, basically have one argument: that it’s a necessary evil, being the only source of energy within reach…
solar PV

Solar Photovoltaics: Pros and Cons

Solar PV is perhaps what most people think of when they think of renewables (though we actually use more biomass). Solar PV can…
