Genetically-modified organisms (GMOs)

A triple-bottom-line look at the GMO debate

A genetically-modified organism (GMO) is the result of a laboratory process in which genes are extracted from the DNA of a species of plant or animal, modified or copied, and reintroduced into the genome of the same or a different species.

While mankind has practiced selective plant and animal breeding for centuries, the modern GMO process is decidedly different. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, as well as other government departments and researchers from across the scientific community, maintain that GMOs are as safe as conventional crops. But advocacy groups, consumers and even companies are calling on government to require labeling of products containing GMO ingredients so shoppers can decide for themselves.

The GMO debate will undoubtedly rage on, and we’ll have our eyes peeled. Read on for our coverage.
