I have to hand it to Audi. Their upcoming “green police” advertisements (destined for the super bowl) are absolutely hilarious. This could be the first big environmental meme of 2010 – the perfect mix of “Reno 911″ style comedy and enough subtle cynicism to actually get people to think. If you haven’t seen them yet, [...]
Ed Note: Voting is now closed. We’ll tally things up and have a wrap up post for you mid-day Monday. Earlier this month, we ran a post in which we asked you to nominate the CEOs who are doing the most to advance principals of sustainability in their companies. And nominate you did–we received more [...]
By Amina Horozic You’re from where? I was almost twelve years old when I came to the US in 1994. Since then whenever I mention that I am from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, I am always inundated with all sorts of unusual questions. Occasionally, I have to clarify that it is a country in Southeastern Europe east [...]
A Harvard Business Review article just listed 50 ‘best performing’ CEOs. Not surprisingly the authors based their evaluation on shareholder value creation. This group of execs are truly superstars having created on average almost a 1000% increase in shareholder value. Steve Jobs was number one in this study’s list. Without a doubt, history will remember [...]
Imagine walking into a Walmart to buy a bag of potato chips and seeing not only how two competing bags of chips compare on price but also how they compare in terms of green house gas (GHG) emissions. Then, imagine the ramifications if both bags of chips cost the same, but one bag had twice the [...]
by Ahmed Riaz Summer in Lahore, Circa 2005 As my friend, Mohammad, opened up the truck of his car I noticed something rather strange. Inside was large metal canister with a gauge and pipes sticking out. Obviously seeing something that looked like homemade rocket attached to inside of your car was a cause for concern. [...]
The holidays are finally here. Turkey leftovers, the smell of pine and baked apple pie, families snuggling up in warm winter homes. And who can forget that important part of the holidays – the sacred ritual of gift giving. Or more specifically, our annual obligation to support the myth that possessing more material items will [...]
What does the Copenhagen Communique mean to an entrepreneur? Am I being too blunt to suggest the answer is “nothing?” Entrepreneurs are focused on their customers as the source of inspiration and profits. Laws passed by politicians receive entrepreneurial attention only when they impact their customers’ ability to buy or their cost of operations. The [...]
When you hear the term “green marketing,” it typically conjures up images of recycling symbols, meaningful imagery, and stories of passionate company founders. But Curb, a London based “natural media company” takes it to another, more literal level: It creates marketing using natural elements, including sea salt, snow tagging and compost art (sans manure, thankfully!). [...]
A favorite aspect of my consulting practice is when I receive an invitation to sit in a room with entrepreneurs starting businesses that they believe will produce an iPhone app, or even that they’ll become the next Google. I had just such an opportunity at the Venture Summit, Silicon Valley hosted by Always On. What [...]
An Australian expression I love and use constantly is “No worries!” That phrase captures the essence of an entrepreneur’s faith. And it captures my faith that it will be our entrepreneurs, rather than government, that lead the way in figuring out solutions to our current environmental and economic mess. My attendance at the Cleantech Open [...]
I don’t know how many of you remember green stamps. Back when our phones were universally black and we saw the USA in our Chevrolets there was this fantastic brand loyalty marketing program where every purchase at a participating store resulted in an allocation of green stamps (just the like postage kind) that moms would [...]
China and the U.S. have now announced commitments to manage emissions prior to the Copenhagen Summit. This is hugely significant since these two countries contribute approximately 55% of the entire world’s CO2 emissions. But each country’s respective path for addressing CO2 emissions are significantly divergent. President Obama publicly committed to a reduction of CO2 emissions [...]
“The idea of building a business selling sustainability without having a clearly articulated price competitiveness strategy is a recipe for failure.” That sentence from The Secret Green Sauce is “best practices #1” being used by companies that are making money going green. And it is issue number one for the solar industry. The good news [...]
In the mid-1990’s, while serving as the General Marketing Manager for Georgia Power, I had the honor of managing the team of exceptionally bright people that designed an industry-pioneering meter-linked, integrated real time pricing/demand side management program. Today, I understand this legacy system now bills $2 billion annually on the Southern Company system, a utility [...]
Manufacturing in America has eroded over the decades to approximately 10% of our country’s annual Gross Domestic Product. The Bureau of Labor Statistics documents 3 million jobs lost in manufacturing between 1996 and 2006. At an average manufacturing hourly wage of $18.50 representing a loss of $115 billion in annual manufacturing wages. I witnessed this [...]
“The faith community must be heard, now is the time for people of faith to take a moral stand to save our planet.” –Reverend Canon Sally G. Bingham, president of The Regeneration Project Interfaith Power & Light I was raised by a God-fearing mom with a strong affinity for fire and brimstone preaching that grounded [...]
Here are a few reasons I am attending The Cleantech Open on November 17, 2009 at San Francisco’s Nob Hill Masonic Center: Bill Weihl, Google Green Energy Czar, is the event’s key note speaker. There will be 120 of the latest clean technologies displayed in the exhibition hall. You can imagine how many venture capitalists [...]
As I have profiled in The Secret Green Sauce, CEOs are emerging as leaders in adopting sustainability with over half of the Fortune 500 companies now tracking their carbon footprint. 85% of American consumers have now purchased a green product. Time will tell if the U.S. Chamber’s position is a sustainable path as America’s businesses shift toward the revenue growth potential created through a sustainable economy.
PACE is a program where a city borrows money to lend to property owners for investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Loaned funds are paid back over 20 years through property tax payments. The program started in California and through the efforts of Hidary and the PaceNOW coalition it is now allowed in 15 states.
The emergence of several “green” top level domains (TLDs), including DotGreen (.green) and Dot Eco (.eco), have created quite a stir among many sustainability proponents. (Check out the comments on a previous .eco Triple Pundit article , a Living Green article, and another Triple Pundit piece to see some of their opinions.) It doesn’t appear, [...]
It is time to rethink the language we use to describe efforts to improve our relationship with the environment. Below are the four reasons I believe we have entered a Post-Green, Post-Sustainability Era, and need a new meme: Red or Black Only A price on carbon – whether in the US through ACES or internationally [...]
As much as it might want to, GM doesn’t stand for Green Motors. The legendary but gasping company should get a few props for trying though. The trick now for the General and other U.S. carmakers is to get greener fast while reorganizing, rolling through their bankruptcies and bleeding greenbacks. Sarcasm and skepticism is easy [...]
My book, Revolution in a Bottle, hit the streets this week. It is a quick read that is meant to flow more like a novel, less like a business book. It follows the story of TerraCycle from our beginnings in my dorm room, shoveling maggot filled organic waste to creating products we sold to Wal-Mart [...]
Call me cynical (and you’d be right), but I think that humans as a species have a couple of basic tenancies. We want life to be better and want to do less to make it so. In other words, we want more comfort and convenience at less cost. That is why we live in a consumer based society with disposable products. We also focus almost entirely on short term gain vs. long term gain. There are obviously exceptions to these rules – like our friends the Mennonites – but in general I think this holds true.
As a green business blogger on three sites, I hear about a lot of green business ideas. Today I heard about a near perfect one. Green Any Site. The idea is simple: Before you make a purchase online, you hit the “Green This!” button, and then make your purchase as usual, coupon codes and all. [...]

We all hear about the benefits that businesses derive from going green – cost savings, increased customer loyalty, great PR – and it seems that it’s the big brands that have embraced the opportunity most emphatically. But in fact, much of the ecological impact that our economy has on the planet occurs at a local [...]
