Across the digital universe, brands are asking consumers to click for the good of the planet. Many social media-driven initiatives are naturally intended to build greater awareness of the brand’s own social responsibility positioning. But in asking consumers to create, vote, like, pledge and share online, can these tactics actually foster a change in attitude or even behaviour? Can social media help build a more sustainable society, one campaign at a time?

Do you struggle to find your role keeping the world green? For those who want to participate in saving world I recommend taking the time to think about your individual strengths to save their world.
Construction projects should not be considered Green or sustainable unless they have applied equal consideration to all resources used. In Dubai, the labor resources are treated terribly regardless of the “green” nature of the development, this can be changed by incorporating fair and equitable treatment of construction workers into existing sustainable development laws and guidelines.
In November, Fast Company continued the migration of their online presence toward Co… meaning that each of their sections will be renamed and rebranded using Co+[term]. “Co” means “complementary” in mathematics, or “forming a satisfactory whole.” Co.Design has led the way with its unique look and feel as it explores the important role of design plays in our world. What began as the quest for a fresh, juicy, flavorful tomato culminated in a landmark labor rights agreement which is transforming the lives of agricultural workers in the heart of Florida’s tomato land. Along the way we can learn lessons in stakeholder engagement. I had the opportunity to speak privately with Cheryl Queen, VP of [...]
Increasingly my world is filled with overachievers who feel like underachievers. Are we the FOMO Generation? Is ‘Fear OF Missing Out’ destroying happiness. In past generations people tryied to keep up with the Joneses, their neighbors with a nicer yard, cuter kids, or a better car. But now thanks to LinkedIn and Facebook we have to keep up with the Joneses and the Shahs, Lees, Carters, Smiths, Levys and our hundreds of other acquaintances online.

By Geri Stengel American companies just had their best quarter ever and I have a suggestion for how they can use those profits: Sponsor training and networking for values-driven businesses, those small businesses that create jobs while treating people and the planet with respect. It’s a logical extension of corporate responsibility and would have a [...]
By Madhurya Prakash Wikipedia defines CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) as a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model. Ideally, CSR policy would function as a built-in, self-regulating mechanism whereby business would monitor and ensure its support to law, ethical standards, and international norms. CSR is increasingly becoming business imperative. But not all companies [...]
A common vision emerged during the opening keynote panel discussion at the Net Impact Conference 2010. This is a vision of becoming an ethics and values driven society, incorporating it into business, and integrating this vision into business school curriculum. Easy to say, a bit more difficult to do (even more difficult to find a [...]
From the beginning of its existence, Hewlett Packard (HP) has been ahead of its peers in giving back to the community, showing concern for work/life balance, and acting to preserve the environment — long before it was trendy to do so. Currently, it is the largest technology company in the world, shipping 3.5 products per second. [...]
Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are just as feisty, irreverent, and enthusiastic about their company and beliefs 32 years later. Cohen and Greenfield (let’s just refer to them as Ben and Jerry from now on!) are technically no longer employees of the company, but are still very much involved with their creation behind the scenes. For those of us invited to Burlington this week for a two day crash course in what I would describe as “Fair Trade 101,” we had a special treat in store for us yesterday morning when Ben and Jerry joined us for breakfast and chatted for 30 minutes on why they are behind their company’s shift towards 100% fair trade ingredients.
Dubbed the “Focal Point USA,” GRI’s new office will help increase the number of US-based companies that disclose ESG data to its shareholders. GRI’s New York staff will make it more seamless for companies to improve the quality of their corporate social responsibility reports, as well as offering American corporations an opportunity to have input on the development of new guidelines for sustainability reporting.

For many professions, continuing education is not an option. Doctors, nurses, architects, teachers and many other licensed professionals must complete a certain number of credit hours to maintain their professional certification. Licensing boards ensure that individuals comply. Such standards do not exist for those in Corporate Social Responsibility, a relatively new profession, but that does [...]
By Nathan Shedroff In response to Prof. Aneel Karnani’s recent Wall Street Journal article “The Case Against Corporate Social Responsibility“ It’s a sad day when the Wall Street Journal, usually known for accurate reporting and thoughtful opinions, not only publishes something so illogical and devoid of common sense, but does it with such prominence. I [...]
Often, when we think of sustainable companies and corporate social responsibility we think of Patagonia, Stonyfield, Seventh Generation and the like: companies that have sustainability as part of their DNA and stakeholder engagement as the foundation for company culture. But what about the sustainability efforts of not so green companies? What about the CSR initiatives [...]
By Dave Pedersen In July, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that climate change legislation would not be pursued in any meaningful way by Senate leadership during 2010. With Democratic prospects looking tough for the mid-term elections, it is unclear when this legislation will be revived. Based on this news, public corporations might be tempted [...]
As more companies show interest in creating corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports that actually demonstrate transparency and accountability, there is a surge in integrated reporting, or “one report,” in which a company’s financials and sustainability reports are intertwined into a single report. One concern over integrated reporting is that just like a company’s CSR report, [...]
