Airports have been given sustainability guidelines for monitoring and reporting on ‘wildlife strikes’, in which animals are hit by aeroplanes, often causing passenger accidents.
The Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) sixth sector supplement provides advice on how airport operators can reduce the risks associated with these strikes by measuring their number and impact.
The many examples of such accidents include goats on the runway, and the recent Hudson River crash-landing, after a pilot flew through a flock of geese.
The supplement for airports also covers noise pollution, on which the GRI says airports should conduct extensive stakeholder engagement in lieu of internationally agreed levels. Noise reduction recommendations include refusing cargo aeroplanes and changing flight paths and heights.
Matt Harris, senior director of San Diego International Airport, said: ‘For a busy airport like San Diego, it can be challenging to know where to start with sustainability reporting. The airports clarify what to measure and manage.’
