The beauty group Avon has become the latest company to commit to sustainable palm oil.
The multinational joins Boots, Cadbury and Kraft Foods in a commitment to purchase GreenPalm certificates, a trading scheme to promote wider uptake of sustainable palm oil production.
Avon says it will purchase all its palm oil through GreenPalm-certificated suppliers. This follows Kellogg’s pledge to use GreenPalm because of a lack of sustainable palm oil elsewhere.
Food companies account for about 80 per cent of global palm oil use, but cosmetics and personal goods companies are significant purchasers too. Avon, which uses 100 tons a year, claims it is the first beauty company to commit to buying all its palm oil from sustainable sources.
Avon has also joined the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, which endorses the GreenPalm scheme. The company said: ‘While Avon is not a significant user of palm oil, the company has made the commitment to take a leadership position by purchasing GreenPalm.’
