Standard Chartered bank is to give financial education to 6900 teenage girls in Jordan through its global community investment programme, ‘Goal’.
The programme will target underprivileged girls aged 14-18 and teach them ‘fundamental life skills’, partly through the playing of games and sport. It will deliver the initiative in partnership with the local wing of a global NGO, Right to Play, which uses sport to help youth development.
Goal, which was set up in 2006, already runs in India (Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai) and Nigeria (Abuja and Lagos), and is set to launch in China (Xi’an, Nanjing, and Chongqing) this year. Overall, it aims to provide 100,000 young women across Asia, Africa and the Middle East with financial education by 2013.
Gill James, head of sustainability at Standard Chartered, said: ‘One in 12 girls in Jordan becomes a mother before the age of 18. Our aim is to give girls an opportunity to play, build confidence through sport, and learn important life skills that empower them to make informed decisions.’
