CompostModern 2011: Design Influencing Consumption Behaviors

By Scott Cooney

Autodesk's recent partnership with UK-based Granta Design has the sustainable design world all abuzz. It partnered Autodesk's world class design software with one of the best databases of sustainability characteristics of input materials. There is a strong and growing awareness that sustainable design can contribute significantly to a sustainable economy.

An upcoming event in San Francisco, January 22-23rd, produced by the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA)-San Francisco, pushes the envelope on how design influences consumption. Titled "Fertile Ground for Designing a Sustainable Future," CompostModern was founded in 2003.

Speakers at the event include Yves Behar, Designer of One Laptop per Child's $100 laptop, and Scott Thomas, Design Director at Obama for America. The first day consists of workshop sessions and speakers. The second day, which is new for this year's CompostModern, is an unconference, where participants can come together to discuss design concepts, educate each other, and co-create projects.

Last year, 600+ participants attended from all over the country. This year, a similar crowd is expected. Events are also simulcast and videos will be edited for use by other AIGA chapters outside the San Francisco Bay Area. Registration is $99 for students, $199 for professionals.
