An initiative to promote better fire prevention measures in Bangladesh clothing factories has been set up by Social Accountability International (SAI) and the International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers Federation.
The move began in the capital Dhaka last month with a two-day stakeholder dialogue on fire safety, attended by more than 90 representatives of government, factory managers, NGOs, trade unions and global brands.
Among international retailers that flew-in delegates were Disney, Gap, Jones Apparel, H&M, Walmart and Next.
As a follow-on from the discussions, managers from 20 factories will begin a pilot three-month training programme on fire safety this month, to be delivered by SAI experts.
A trade union grouping, the Bangladesh National Council, has also agreed to convene a 'high level dialogue' on the issue as soon as possible.
There have been several devastating fires in Bangladesh factories supplying the apparel sector recently - including last month, when at least 25 workers died and dozens more were injured at a unit in the Ashulia industrial zone near Dhaka.
