Firms get online children’s rights advice

A new online tool for businesses that threaten children’s rights has been created by the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre.

The new section of the large non-profit website will include practical guidance on specific issues such as child labour and trafficking, news on projects and alleged abuses, analysis of lawsuits against companies, and advice on global standards.

The portal provides a platform for the new Unicef Children’s Rights and Business Principles Initiative, which aims to develop principles for companies managing their impact on children.  Information at present includes a CNN report on bonded child labour in the Nepalese carpet industry, a lawsuit filed in the US against the tour company Wet-A-Line alleging child prostitution, and a call by Human Rights Watch for the Mali government to curb child labour.

All the information on the portal is accessible free, and it joins other special sections, including those on business and conflict, corporate legal accountability, and the work of John Ruggie. The Resource Centre intends to add a portal on business and freedom of association next year.

Annabel Short, the manager of the new project, said: ‘There is growing awareness globally of companies’ human rights responsibilities. In that context, we are delighted to launch this special portal focused on the rights of children. We hope it provides increased recognition and accountability for children who are affected by corporate activities, NGOs with greater exposure of their work in this field, and business with tools and examples to follow.”
