Heineken tackles HIV/Aids

By 3p Contributor

One of the world’s largest beer manufacturers has initiated three HIV and Aids prevention projects in Africa.

Heineken will support the expansion of three existing programmes to help communities where it operates in Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa.

It will fund the addition of Nigeria to the PharmAccess African Studies to Evaluate Resistance, which at present monitors HIV drug resistance at clinics, laboratories and research institutions in six countries.

In the DRC, Heineken will support two ‘road clinics’ providing health services and education to more than 25,000 transport employees, and in South Africa it will help to expand the King’s Hope Development Foundation project giving palliative care in areas where it operates.

HIV and Aids policies are key to Heineken’s Brewing a Better Future sustainability strategy, even though the company, as a beverage manufacturer, has no direct connection to the disease. The newest measures were announced at a multi-stakeholder HIV symposium hosted by the company.
