Guidance for information technology companies on a universal standard for the reporting of carbon emissions is to be developed in a large-scale collaboration of environmental organizations.
The World Resources Institute, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the IT industry’s own Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) and the Carbon Trust will offer advice on common approaches and methodologies for calculating the carbon footprints of products and services at the end of the year.
NGOs, government experts and academics will help with the preparation, and companies are now being consulted.
The guidance will be published as an IT ‘sector supplement’ to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative, one of the most widely used reporting standards for greenhouse gas emissions.
The group expects the guidance, in addition to producing more comparable data, will ‘encourage companies to measure, report and reduce’ their carbon footprint.
