Responsible Business Summit Comes to NYC this June

By Jen Boynton

Take a quick peek at the event calendar in the sidebar at right, and you'll see more sustainability conferences than you can shake a stick at. Many sustainability professionals go it alone in their companies and conferences provide a much needed reality check from peers about the state of sustainability.

But, with dozens of conferences a year, how do you pick which ones to attend? The Responsible Business Summit (a proud sponsor of 3p) is unique in several approaches. First, this conference brings European and US sustainability practitioners together under one roof- with benefits for everyone who cares to learn how things are done on the other side of the pond.

More interestingly, the Responsible Business Summit takes a crowdsourced approach to agenda development unlike any I've seen before:

Over the two days, speakers will cover only topics suggested by their peers. Topics requested this year include effective CSR Reporting, stakeholder engagement, sustainable supply chains and embedding CR throughout your organization.

The conference promoters even call this one the end of vague PR-based speeches with little useful content.

All the speakers are expected to give presentations linked specifically to issues integral to their business. This line-up is admittedly awesome:

The Head of Sustainability from Bank of America will discuss how it is embedding sustainability by developing a cross-organization Environmental Council

The Director of Sustainable Development from PepsiCo will discuss how they have built a reputation among stakeholders for taking CSR issues seriously – and what impact this had on their business planning

The SVP from distinguished sustainability pioneer Herman Miller will discuss what impact their commitment – 100% reduction of hazardous waste – had on their supply chain management

The Sustainability Leader of BASF will discuss how risk matrices helped BASF identify potential high-risk suppliers in their extensive supply chain
