John Ruggie’s principles on business and human rights have been adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The principles, the product of six years of work on the issue, provide a global framework for tackling impacts on human rights linked to business activity.
Under the principles, governments and business will receive guidance on implementing Ruggie’s ‘protect, respect and remedy’ framework.
Ruggie said: ‘The council’s endorsement establishes the Guiding Principles as the authoritative global reference point for business and human rights. They will also provide civil society, investors and others with tools to measure real progress in the lives of people.’
The principles are the outcome of Ruggie’s 47 consultations, site visits in more than 20 countries, and advice and research from experts all over the world.
Some NGOs have criticized the framework as a business-as-usual approach to human rights, but companies and governments have generally supported the framework.
