The UK arm of the telecoms giant Vodafone has reduced its carbon emissions and travel costs by a quarter over one year through 'mobile working'.
The firms says it has cut 617 tonnes of carbon dioxide through flight reduction and reduced the number of flights by 26 per cent, or around 3500, over the past 12 months.
Vodafone began trying to curb its staff travel impacts after signing up to WWF's 'One in Five' challenge in 2009, which committed it to cutting its business flights by 20 per cent over five years.
The company has gone beyond this commitment through a system of flexible and mobile working, including the provision of smartphones, laptops and secure remote access for staff. It also claims to have increased productivity as a result of its efforts, although it has no figures on this.
WWF said: 'The more solutions that are available to reduce the need to travel, the better. Vodafone UK has achieved the One in Five Challenge by making the most of its own technology.'
