War-torn Iraq becomes latest member of the Global Compact family

Iraq has become the latest country to launch a local UN Global Compact network, just as US troops are set to leave the country at the end of the month.

Last month, representatives of government, multinationals, local firms and civil society met to discuss the benefits and implementation within the Iraqi economic environment, exploring how to best engage private sector participation in the Compact.
 
The parties agreed to meet annually and produce a report on the progress of the Compact’s principles in the country, as well as to promote its principal goals and practices.

The UN said the move shows the increasing recognition of corporate responsibility worldwide as a factor for positive change, and the important role of the private sector in promoting social development.

Despite Iraq’s significant challenges and instability following the US-led invasion of the country in 2003, 31 Iraq-based organisations have signed up to the Compact over the last few months.

Hamid Khalaf Ahmed, chief of staff of the Iraqi prime minister’s office, commented: “Such an important initiative in partnership with the private sector is key to supporting the government’s efforts to build a modern and democratic country.”
