AngloAmerican in silicosis scare

By 3p Contributor

AngloAmerican is being taken to the high court by nearly 3,000 African gold miners, who claim they have developed silicosis, a scarring of the lungs, for which there is no cure, because of poor health and safety at subsidiaries in which it held a minority stake. A claim on behalf of 1,056 former miners has been most recently lodged by law firm Hausfeld, adding to a claim on behalf of another 1,600 represented by Leigh Day. Three companies – AngloGold Ashanti, Harmony and Gold Fields – also face claims in South Africa, with total potential damages estimated at $100bn (£62bn, €78bn).
