Burmese farmers speak out

By 3p Contributor

Conflicts over land are emerging across Burma, with farmers’ protests becoming common, sparking publication last month of a letter of solidarity from Focus on the Global South opposing land sales. Two thirds of the Burmese population are farmers dependent on their land, but Focus said the Burmese government is looking to turn land into capital and formalise property rights with new laws designed to encourage foreign investment. It also seeks to establish a legal framework to reallocate ‘wastelands’ to domestic and foreign investors.
