Computer networking firm Cisco has launched an initiative in India to improve access to healthcare for the country’s rural population. The US-based multinational is to pilot a remote healthcare project in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka, “to bridge the urban-rural gap” – though two-thirds of India’s population lives in rural areas, 80% of its doctors work in cities. The company will connect healthcare centres and a hospital using technology already in use in the Western world. Aravind Sitaraman, Cisco’s president for inclusive growth, said: “This project marks significant progress towards the Inclusive Growth goal of using technology as the enabler to bridge the urban-rural gap and Cisco’s vision of changing the way people work, live, play and learn.”
