At the latest meeting of the EU’s Agriculture & Fisheries Council, it was decided that member states’ fishing fleets should aim to keep catches within sustainable limits by 2020 at the latest. The council hopes that fisheries will be managed more closely with targets linked to limits that would prevent the decline in fish stock numbers. They also want to prevent caught fish being thrown back, forcing fish to be landed and counted toward targets. These recommendations will now be sent for consideration by the European Parliament.
