British MPs have called for the imposition of a no-drill zone in an environmental sanctuary in the Arctic, describing the drilling there by Shell, ExxonMobil, Gazprom and other oil and gas companies as ‘reckless’. The MPs also said the moratorium should be imposed until safety standards are improved, in a report last month by the environmental audit committee published just days after alarming new evidence emerged about Arctic sea ice melting at record levels. They also chime with the conclusions of an environment committee of MEPs in Brussels, who called for tougher financial guarantees from oil companies to ensure they could pay for spills in European waters.
