Reckitt Benckiser, a leading producer of household cleaning and consumer healthcare products, has exceeded its 2020 target of cutting carbon emissions by a fifth – eight years early.
In its latest sustainability report, Reckitt says its carbon footprint per single consumer use of a product has been cut by 21% since 2007.
The company pointed to packaging innovations in brands such as Nurofen and Gaviscon Advance, creating double concentration products, as well as using less packaging and transport to reduce emissions.
‘Ground-breaking’ innovations to the Air Wick aerosol product, in which the butane propellant was replaced by compressed air, alone cut 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2011.
Calling the cuts a “tremendous achievement”, chief executive Rakesh Kapoor said: “We will build on it as part of our new business strategy, which embraces sustainability more strongly than ever.”
