Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is tapping renewable energy by installing geo-thermal heat pump technology, initially at 100 of its stores. After testing the technology at its Crayford store, in south-east London, Sainsbury’s is hopeful that 30% of each store’s energy needs can be met in this way. The schemes aim to deliver up to 100MW of renewable energy in supermarkets by the end of 2016. Sainsbury’s 20 by 20 Sustainability Plan renewables commitment aims to reduce the company’s carbon emissions by 30% and deliver a fully renewable heat strategy for its supermarkets by 2030.
