Sport governing bodies unite to fight illegal betting and corrupt result fixing

By 3p Contributor
Corrupt and irregular betting patterns in the UK are being fought by a group formed to counter what has been called the biggest threat facing sport.

Governing bodies representing 320 sports – known as the Sport & Recreation Alliance and including UK Athletics, the Football Association and British Rowing – have produced a code of practice to promote tough new rules for competitors, establishing stricter policing and education to show athletes how to avoid corruption by fixers.

A new website, launched last month, has news and guidance for competitors and trainers. It covers subjects such as government spending plans, betting and recruitment of directors.

Interpol estimates that illegal betting in Asia alone is worth £320bn ($500bn, €408bn), creating huge pressure to fix results for financial rewards.
