Details of the highest-emitting US business facilities have been revealed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The information, based on the 2009 Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, which makes the disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions by heavily-polluting sectors compulsory, marks a US first in the publication of emissions data.
The 6,700 facilities analysed across nine industries account for 80% of US greenhouse gas emissions. Of the 100 worst offenders, 96 were power plants.
Other high-emitting sites include steel plants, oil refineries and chemical works.
Unsurprisingly, the highest-emitting state was Texas, which released more than double the amount of any other state’s greenhouse gases.
The database, which is searchable by location, industry and type of emission, will be a key tool for investors and, the agency hopes, will drive climate change innovation.
The EPA predicts the database, which is to be expanded during the next year, will become “a critical tool for businesses and other innovators to find cost- and fuel-saving efficiencies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and foster technologies to protect public health and the environment”.
